What is the first word in the term “social media?” Social. I keep digging down to find out how to do this right.

Being social over a computer is simple. Going viral… may not be so simple.

Being social is really just getting excited about other people. What makes them so cool? Are they secretly a top secret agent? Are they a SCUBA instructor? Are they a fan of Ohio State?

A frequent quote – “Everyone’s crazy on some level!” Well, everyone’s cool on some level too.

What is cool about your network?

Thanks to Jimmy Mackin for connecting me to Steve Yegge’s rant.

I’m all about solid foundations and understanding of the basics. Well, something just hit me that I have not really considered. Accessibility.

In computers and business, accessibility is really A, #1, the end all, top priority. If you can get the technology, you can let it run. If you can get the personnel, including great managers and staff, your company can take off. But that is given you can get them.

Let’s change the relationship to your customers. What do they need or want? How can you get them to your product?

Again, this is a fundamental concept. You give them access to your product and get out of the way.

“If you build it, they will come” right? If there aren’t roadblocks keeping them to just window shopping.

What if your sole purpose was to get the product to your customers and that was it? No more signups for some damn newsletter; no more 3 phone calls to get in touch with the right person; no more surveys for some case study. JUST PRODUCT!

From this standpoint, what of those “signups” are really needed to get the job done? What other avenues can you put your product in front of the customer’s eyes? How can you get out of the way of your own product?

I’m running into a lot of people who are feeling overwhelmed with different things. The bulk of frustration, I would say, has to do with learning technology.

I grew up with computers. When my brother was born, my dad said to my mom “They WILL know the computer! It’s the future!” As we now know, he was right. I didn’t have many friends growing up. Up until high school, I had 1 good friend – Lucy – my computer. So, you could say that it’s my nature to be in technology.

One of my agents asked me the other day how I got to be “SO TECHIE.” After laughing for a second and answering that I didn’t think I was, I thought about it. Now, I’d say that I’m just curious about technologies in general.

How would a politician become President? I’d guess that they love to talk about governments. I’d guess that they know how each and every government on earth works. I’d guess they know how to get elected to city council and the state senate, sherriff and governor. I’d guess that they talk about it every chance they get. I’d bet you that they love watching the “talking heads” on TV and maybe they’ve been one of them at some point.

The point is, nobody gets good at something without putting a lot of time into looking at it, talking about it, and doing it. Professionals spend so much of their time (free or not) thinking about and beating on their craft.
